Dr. Laverne Schlie:

Dr. LaVerne "Vern" Schlie is senior scientist for laser technology, Directed Energy Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Force Materiel Command, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M. He is responsible for planning, conducting and coordinating research in laser technology while serving as the principal scientific authority and independent researcher in the field of laser technology within the laboratory. Schlie is widely recognized in the laser community. He advises and directs many laser programs within the AFRL, and participates on many governmental committees for laser technology, and applications and effects with the departments of Defense and Energy, NASA and the National Science Foundation. He is a member of the scientific and professional cadre of senior executives.
Schlie is known for his work in high-energy laser technology developments and applications important to the Air Force. His diversified research group's laser efforts involves electric, chemical, photolytic, solid-state, and ultrashort fs and ps lasers; the associated areas of plasma physics, microwaves, high-voltage engineering, optics, chemical physics, fluid dynamics, cryogenics and laser-material interactions. In addition, he serves as adjunct physics professor at the University of New Mexico and the Air Force Institute of Technology, graduating more than 20 doctoral and graduate students. He has written more than 120 publications and presentations, and holds 14 patents. Schlie's research has resulted in major advances in photolytic iodine, electrical discharge lasers, chemical oxygen-iodine, carbon monoxide, excimer and fs-ultrashort laser technology. Many of his laser research advances and patents have been transferred to industry through cooperative research and development agreements, and small business innovative research and technology transfers.
Schlie's main efforts are directed toward integrating high-energy lasers and high-power microwaves into fighter aircraft, such as the F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22 and the Joint Strike Fighter, plus other air vehicle platforms for tactical applications. He initiated the study on Directed Energy Application for Tactical Airborne Combat, then served as technology adviser to the applications panel developing the use of various directed energy technologies for tactical uses on fighter aircraft to enhance the warfighter's capabilities for the 21st century. He led an integrated process study team on tactical high-energy laser fighters dealing with all aspects of the laser's integration and potential future use to the warfighter. He is the focal point for this activity within the AFRL. Also coupled to this effort are technologies of advanced sensors and aircraft self-defense, which utilize developments of compact, lightweight high-energy lasers.
