Dr. Michael J. Duggin:

Military Branch:United States Airforce
Dr. Michael J. Duggin, a member of the scientific and professional cadre of senior executives, is Senior Scientist, Space Vehicles Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M. Dr. Duggin generates new concepts and aids in developing leading-edge technologies for space-based surveillance and other military applications. He leads and conducts concept development, analysis, modeling and simulation for performance characterization of new space capabilities for the military. This includes designing novel space systems and assessing performance characteristics involving advanced techniques and technical interactions with scientists and technologists associated with theory, experiments, simulations and military needs.
Dr. Duggin was born in England and immigrated to Australia with his parents in 1951. He obtained a doctorate of philosophy in physics at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, in 1965. He did a post-doctoral tour at the University of Pittsburgh, and spent several years working for the Australian government before coming to the United States in 1979. Prior to joining the Air Force research laboratories, Dr. Duggin taught at the State University of New York since 1979. He was also an adjunct professor at Syracuse University and at the Rochester Institute of Technology for several years. During this time he was a consultant to NASA, the U.S. Navy, and various government instrumentalities.
Dr. Duggin has successfully designed experiments, made measurements and developed protocols for making measurements relevant to remote sensing in multiple bandpasses and using polarized light. The results have been incorporated into feasibility studies and have been used in sensor calibration. Additionally, Dr. Duggin used simulation studies to determine the feasibility of performing remote sensing tasks, calibrated remotely sensed digital image data, and developed algorithms for image analysis to perform specialized functions. He is the author or co-author of approximately 100 publications, and has been an invited speaker, session chair or co-chair at several international conferences. Dr. Duggin has performed research in these areas for almost 40 years, and taught for more than 20 years as a full professor. He has been elected to fellowship in several internationally recognized scientific societies.
