Maureen T. Koetz, a member of the Senior Executive Service, is Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Environment, Safety and Occupational Health, Washington, D.C. Ms. Koetz provides oversight and renders advice, guidance and direction for policies, plans, programs and budgets in all matters related to the protection and enhancement of environmental quality, and the ensurance of safe and healthful work situations. Ms. Koetz provides executive leadership and direction to the development and implementation of continuing integrated programs that maintain the Air Force leadership role in environment, safety and occupational health matters. Her responsibilities include ensuring Air Force compliance with existing statutory and regulatory requirements promulgated by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Labor. She also represents the Air Force in testimony before hearings of congressional committees on legislative, government operations and appropriations matters as they relate to installation management.
Ms. Koetz assumed her position in January 2002. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Koetz served as the Director of Environmental Policy and Programs for the Nuclear Energy Institute, overseeing policy development for environmental issues affecting the nuclear industry. These included plant valuation, Clean Air Act compliance, climate change, environmental issues in industry restructuring, green electricity marketing and environmental radiological standards.
From January 1995 to July 1997, Ms. Koetz served as environmental counsel to the Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, handling issues related to environmental management of the nuclear weapons complex, environmental compliance at federal facilities under the Committees jurisdiction, and regulatory reform. Before that, Ms. Koetz was environmental counsel to New Mexico Sen. Pete Domenici while serving a Congressional fellowship awarded by the American Political Science Association. Other previous positions include working as a staff attorney in the Office of the Deputy Assistant General Counsel of the Air Force, and Assistant Regional Counsel at Region V of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Ms. Koetz served on active duty in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate Generals Corps. She received an honorable discharge in the rank of lieutenant. In 1979, Ms. Koetz spent a school semester in Italy at the American University of Rome.
