Rear Admiral Dennis D. Woofter:

A native of Colby, Kans., Rear Admiral Woofter attended Kansas State University where he earned a wrestling scholarship, affiliated with Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, and in 1965, graduated with a BS in Secondary Education (Physical Sciences). After teaching junior high school science for one year, he began his naval career via Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School. Commissioned in February, 1967, he was designated a naval aviator on 13 June 1968.
He joined the VA-144 “Roadrunners” following A-4 Skyhawk fleet replacement pilot training at NAS Lemoore with VA-125. Embarked with Air Wing Five in USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA 31), he completed two combat tours to Southeast Asia, flying 168 missions and accumulating over 300 carrier landings. Between tours he was a member of the first class at the Light Attack Weapons School (LAWS). Rear Adm. Woofter concluded his naval aviation career as an A-7E instructor pilot and weapons instructor.
Recommissioned an Ensign in the Navy Dental Corps, he attended the University of Missouri - Kansas City, School of Dentistry, on an active duty scholarship where he completed the four-year curriculum in three years. Upon serving four years as a general dentist he transferred to the selected reserves to pursue residency training in Pediatric Dentistry at the Oregon Health Sciences University. In 1980, he established a solo pediatric dental practice in Ashland, Ore.
Since being recalled to active duty in 1984, Rear Adm. Woofter's assignments include: Head, Pediatric Dentistry, U.S. Naval Dental Center, Guam (84-87); Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, QA Directorate, (87-90); Specialty Advisor for Pediatric Dentistry (87-92); Naval Postgraduate Dental School (90-92) where he established their first department of Pediatric Dentistry; and Executive Officer, National Naval Dental Center (92-95).
Command assignments: U.S. Naval Dental Center Far East, Yokosuka, Japan with additional duties as Force Dental Officer, Commander U.S. Naval Forces Japan and Fleet Dental Officer, Seventh Fleet (95-98) and Naval Dental Center Southwest, San Diego, Calif. (98-01).
Flag assignments: 33rd Chief of the Navy Dental Corps/Deputy Chief BUMED for Dental Operations Support (9/01-11/03) and Chief of Staff/Program Executive Officer, BUMED (11/03-8/04). Rear Adm. Woofter assumed his current position on 7 September 04.
Rear Adm. Woofter maintains membership in the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Federal Services Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He is a Fellow of both the International and American Colleges of Dentists.
