Rear Admiral Fred Byus:

Position: Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea
Since nuclear power and submarine training, Rear Adm. Byus has served on the submarines USS Swordfish (SSN 579), USS New York City (SSN 696) and USS Plunger (SSN 595). Rear Adm. Byus served as Submarine Liaison Officer and Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer for Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group 3/Battle Group Foxtrot. He was Commanding Officer of USS Tautog (SSN 639) from May 1993 to November 1995. From March 2000 to April 2001, Rear Adm. Byus was Commander, Submarine Squadron Seven. He was Chief of Staff, U.S. Seventh Fleet, from September 2002 to August 2003. He was promoted to Rear Admiral (Lower Half) in September 2003.
Rear Adm. Byus' shore assignments have been at the Navy Prototype Training Unit Ballston Spa; in the Attack Submarine Branch, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations; Chief, Program and Budget Branch of the Joint Staff Program Budget Analysis Division (J8); Director of Operations (N3) and Executive Assistant for Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Rear Adm. Byus has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Joint Meritorious Service Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal. He proudly wears the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation and Battle Efficiency ribbons.
Rear Adm. Byus is currently Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea in Seoul, Korea.
