Rear Admiral Mark J. Edwards:

Position: Director, Surface Warfare (OPNAV N76)
His first assignment was as the Combat Information Center Officer aboard USS Damato (DD 871), homeported in Newport, R.I. Subsequent sea tours were in San Diego, Calif., and include Engineer Officer aboard USS Elliot (DD 967), Executive Officer in USS Fletcher (DD 992), and Chief Staff Officer with Destroyer Squadron Seventeen.
Rear Adm. Edwards' command tours include Fletcher and USS Chosin (CG 65), both homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He has deployed to the western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf as well as participating in the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Coral Sea in the South Pacific while in command of Fletcher.
Significant shore duty includes instructor tours in Newport, R.I., at the Senior Officer Ship Material Readiness Course and the Surface Warfare Officer School Command as the director of the command department. He served in Washington, D.C., on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations as the branch head for surface warfare requirements and future plans and as the Navy analyst in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Threat Reduction. He later served as the Commander, Logistics Group, Western Pacific Singapore/Task Force 73/Task Force 712. Before joining the OPNAV staff in November 2002 he served as Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group Five/Nimitz Battlegroup.
Rear Adm. Edwards' awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with three Gold Stars, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Gold Stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two Gold Stars and numerous unit and campaign awards.
Rear Adm. Edwards was promoted to flag rank in February 2000.
