Rear Admiral Robert T. Conway, Jr.:

Rear Adm. Conway’s sea duty assignments commenced on board USS Vesole (DD 878), where he served as Main Propulsion Assistant and Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer. Subsequent sea duty tours included: USS Towers (DDG 9); Chief Engineer; USS Bainbridge (CGN 25) Combat Systems Officer; and Executive Officer of USS Gridley (CG 21). Rear Adm. Conway served as Chief Staff Officer for Commander, Destroyer Squadron Seventeen and on the staff of Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet Propulsion Examination Board, where he served as a senior examiner for steam propulsion.
Rear Adm. Conway commanded USS John Young (DD 973) from April 1992 to January 1994. During his command tour, John Young was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for Operation Desert Storm and the Battle Efficiency “E”. Rear Adm. Conway’s also served as Commander, Destroyer Squadron Seven from January 1996 to July 1997. During this command tour he deployed as the “Sea Combat Commander” for the Constellation Battle Group in the western Pacific and Arabian Gulf. He also has commanded Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. From April 2003 to October 2004, he served as the Plankowner Commander of Expeditionary Strike Group One, San Diego, Calif., and deployed to the Arabian Gulf and Red Sea in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Rear Adm. Conway assumed duties as Commander Task Force Warrior in August of 2004.
Duties ashore included Naval Facility Cape Hatteras (SOUSS), where he qualified as one of the first Oceanographic Research Watch Officers; Officer Candidate School, Newport, R.I., as a tactics instructor and educational curriculum/programs officer; Deputy Commander, Operational Test and Evaluation Force Pacific, as the senior test director for the Tomahawk Cruise Missile Project; Head, Surface Commander Assignment Branch, Bureau of Naval Personnel (PERS 410) and Deputy to Assistant Chief of Naval Operations for Distribution (PERS 4), Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington, D.C.; Chief, Simulations and Analysis Management Division, J-8 directorate, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C.; Director, Surface Officer Distribution, Bureau of Naval Personnel (PERS 41), Millington, Tenn. From September 2000 until March 2003, he was the unofficial “Mayor of Hawaii” while serving as Commander, Navy Region Hawaii.
Rear Adm. Conway received his master’s degree in education from Providence College, Providence, R.I., in May 1979. Additionally he graduated from National Defense University’s Industrial College of the Armed Forces in May 1990.
Personal decorations include Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (five awards), Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), and various service medals and unit awards.
