Rear Admiral (Select) Charles W. Martoglio:

Rear Admiral (Sel.) Martoglio was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1978 after graduating from high school in West Hartford, Conn. His first sea assignment was in USS Somers (DDG 34) where he served as Gunnery and Missile Officer, First Lieutenant and Main Propulsion Assistant.
Completing his Surface Warfare Qualification in Somers, Rear Adm. (Sel) Martoglio was then assigned to Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group Five as Flag Lieutenant. During this tour he qualified as Battle Group Watch Officer and participated in the Search and Salvage Operations for the Korean airliner shot down by Soviet Forces in 1983. Rear Adm. (Sel) Martoglio’s next at-sea assignment was as Weapons Officer in USS Bunker Hill (CG 52). A plankowner in Bunker Hill, he also served for eighteen months as the ship’s Operations Officer.
Rear Adm. (Sel) Martoglio then served as the commissioning Executive Officer, USS Barry (DDG 52), the first of the Arleigh Burke-class of destroyers to be built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss. Rear Adm. (Sel) Martoglio commanded USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) during the ship’s first deployment to the Persian Gulf in 1997 and the ship and crew won two Battle “E” Awards during his tenure in command. Rear Adm. (Sel) Martoglio’s most recent sea command was as Commander, Destroyer Squadron Twenty-Three during which he also served as the Sea Combat Commander for the Nimitz Strike Group during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Rear Adm. (Sel) Martoglio’s shore tours have included serving as Executive Assistant to Commander, Training Command, U.S. Pacific Fleet; Assistant Branch Head, East Asia/Pacific Branch, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations; Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Requirements; a Division Director at the Navy Warfare Development Command; the senior Mahan Scholar at the U.S. Naval War College; Special Assistant then Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations; and as Executive Assistant to Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command. While serving in this last assignment, Rear Adm. (Sel) Martoglio was selected for promotion to Rear Admiral (lower half). Rear Adm. (Sel) Martoglio currently serves as the Director of Strategy and Policy on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.
Rear Adm. (Sel) Martoglio graduated with highest distinction from the U.S. Naval War College with a masters degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (with two Gold Stars), the Meritorious Service Medal (with four Gold Stars), the Navy Commendation Medal (with Gold Star), the Navy Achievement Medal and a variety of unit and campaign awards.
