Rear Admiral (Select) Mark H. Buzby:

Rear Adm. (sel) Buzby’s Division Officer tour was aboard frigate USS Connole (FF 1056), where he made three deployments to the Mediterranean. His next assignment, from July 1983 to December 1984, was as Combat Systems Officer in hydrofoil USS Aries (PHM 5). During the period, Aries operated extensively throughout the Caribbean conducting surveillance operations and counter narcotics patrols.
He then attended the Surface Warfare Department Head course in Newport, R.I., and joining cruiser USS Yorktown (CG 48) from November 1985 to November 1988 as Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer. During two Mediterranean deployments, Yorktown conducted extensive operations in the Black Sea, as well as multi-carrier Battle Group operations in the Gulf of Sidra against Libyan forces. His first shore assignment was to the OPNAV staff as Point Defense AAW Section Head for Surface Warfare Division (OP-352E).
From January 1992 until August 1993, Rear Adm. (sel) Buzby served as the Commissioning Executive Officer of cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67), after which he returned to Washington to again serve on the OPNAV staff as Aegis Combat System Development Officer (N865G3) until August 1994, followed by a tour on the Joint Staff, Joint Operations Division (J-33/JOD) as an Operations Officer and Chairman’s Briefer until February 1997.
Rear Adm. (sel) Buzby commanded destroyer USS Carney (DDG 64) from August 1997 until January 1999, which included the ship’s first Mediterranean/Arabian Gulf deployment. Under his command, Carney was awarded two Battle “E” awards, the Navy Unit Commendation, Gold and Silver Anchor awards for retention excellence, and the USS Arizona Memorial award as the most combat ready ship in the U.S. Navy over a two year period. Following this tour, he reported to Gaeta, Italy, where he served as Sixth Fleet Assistant Operations Officer from February 1999 to October 2000 including combat operations as part of Operation Allied Force.
He assumed command of Destroyer Squadron Thirty-One in December 2000, conducting two deployments to the Arabian Gulf as Sea Combat Commander for Abraham Lincoln Battle Group in support of Operations Southern Watch and Enduring Freedom before being relieved in November 2002. Rear Adm. (sel) Buzby became the 16th Commanding Officer of Surface Warfare Officers School Command on 25 April 2003. In November 2004, he reported to his current assignment on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations as the Deputy for Surface Ships (N76E).
Rear Adm. (sel) Buzby’s personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), and various other unit and campaign awards. In 1984, he was the COMNAVSURFLANT Junior Officer Shiphandling Award winner.
