He served initially as a surface line officer on the nuclear cruiser USS Long Beach (CGN 9) as Talos Missile Fire Control Officer during two western Pacific deployments to the Tonkin Gulf. In February 1975 he entered naval flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in July 1976.
Rear Adm. Tomaszeski's aviation sea tours have included two assignments in Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Nine (HS-9) on board USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and his command tour in HS-5 on board USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). He served as Executive Officer of USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) and deployed as Commanding Officer of both the amphibious assault ship USS New Orleans (LPH 11) and the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63).
Rear Adm. Tomaszeski's shore duty tours have been as a fleet replacement pilot instructor in HS-1; Flag Secretary and aide to the Commander, Sea-Based Antisubmarine Warfare Wings Atlantic; Carrier Helicopter Requirements Officer for the Assistant Chief of Naval Operations (Air Warfare); Commanding Officer of HS-1, the Atlantic Fleet's Carrier Helicopter Fleet Replacement Squadron; Chief of Staff to the Commander, Naval Base San Diego; and Senior U.S. Naval Officer and Chief, Information Systems Branch at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers, Europe in Casteau, Belgium.
Rear Adm. Tomaszeski's initial Flag assignment was as Commander, Fleet Air Mediterranean; Commander, Naval Surface Group Mediterranean; Commander, Maritime Surveillance and Reconnaissance Forces; and Commander, Maritime Air Forces Mediterranean. In July 2001, Rear Adm. Tomaszeski assumed the duties as Commander, Carrier Group Six/John F. Kennedy Carrier Strike Group and deployed supporting Operation Nobel Eagle and combat operations in Operation Enduring Freedom. In October 2002, he was assigned as Commander, Navy Personnel Command/Deputy Chief of Naval Personnel. He assumed his current duties as the 16th Oceanographer/Navigator of the U.S. Navy in August 2003.
