Vice Adm. Stanley R. Szemborski:

Vice Adm. Szemborski is a native of Paterson, N.J., and was valedictorian of Don Bosco Technical High School, Class of 1967. He graduated with distinction from the United States Naval Academy in 1971 and earned a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1972.
Following completion of nuclear power training, Vice Adm. Szemborski served aboard USS Henry Clay (SSBN 625) where he completed three strategic deterrent patrols and a refueling overhaul. During this tour, Henry Clay was named the Outstanding Fleet Ballistic Missile submarine in the Pacific Fleet and received both the COMSUBRON FIFTEEN Battle Efficiency and Engineering Excellence awards. He served as Engineer Officer aboard USS Omaha (SSN 692) during two western Pacific deployments. Omaha was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation and the COMSUBRON SEVEN Engineering Excellence Award. He later served as the Commissioning Executive Officer in USS Providence (SSN-719).
Vice Adm. Szemborski commanded USS Chicago (SSN 721) and conducted the first western Pacific deployment with a tactically loaded vertical launch Tomahawk missile system. Following this deployment, Chicago was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Pacific Fleet Golden Anchor Award and both the Submarine Squadron Eleven Battle Efficiency and Engineering Excellence Awards. He also commanded USS Houston (SSN 713) during preparation for a depot maintenance period. He later commanded Submarine Squadron Four in Charleston, S.C. SUBRON FOUR ships achieved numerous successes including the Atlantic Fleet Golden Anchor Award, the COMSIXTHFLT Hook EM ASW Award, and the Captain Edward F. Ney Award, and the Squadron staff was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation.
Vice Adm. Szemborski’s shore assignments included a tour as Material Officer on the staff of Submarine Squadron Fourteen in Holy Loch Scotland, the Submarine Squadron Eleven Deputy Commander for Training, the Submarine Force Maintenance Officer on the staff of the Assistant Chief of Naval Operations (Submarine Warfare), an Appropriations Matters Assistant for the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Financial Management) and as Deputy Director of the Investment and Development Division in the Office of the Comptroller of the Navy. Vice Adm. Szemborski served on the Joint Staff as Chief, Forces Division and later as Chief, Program and Budget Analysis Division in the Force Structure, Resources and Assessment Directorate (J-8).
Vice Adm. Szemborski’s Flag Officer assignments include Director of the Operations Division in the Office of Navy Financial Management and Budget where he had direct financial responsibility for the Navy’s Operations and Maintenance and the Navy’s Military Personnel Appropriations and Deputy Director for Resources and Requirements, in the Joint Staff, Force Structure, Resources, and Assessment Directorate (J-8). He is currently assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense as the Principal Deputy Director, Program Analysis and Evaluation.
Among other awards, Vice Adm. Szemborski is authorized to wear the Defense Superior Service Medal, three awards of the Legion of Merit and five awards of the Meritorious Service Medal.
